We are a local authority that makes decisions on behalf of the people in the parish of Staunton. We are part of a level of government closest to the community, with the district authority (Forest of Dean District Council) above us in the hierarchy. As we are the authority closest to the people, we are invariably the first place people come to with concerns or ideas. For this reason we are a vital part of any community.
We make all kinds of decisions on issues that affect the local community. Probably the most common topics we get involved with are managing open spaces, planning matters and campaigning for and delivering better and safer services and facilities.
It’s true to say that on our own we have limited powers to make decisions. But we do have the ability to negotiate with, and the power to influence, other organisations that do make the final decisions (such as the district council, health authorities, police etc). So we can be are extremely powerful. The organisations that make the final decisions know that we give the best reflection of how the community feels about issues, and our views are taken seriously.
